We begin today’s kaleidoscopic look at the China Ev market with a report from Caixin Global that China has replaced Japan as the auto exporter. At least for now. As the Russian market stabilises we may see it swing back to Japan.

Chart of the Day: China tops Japan as world’s No. 1 auto exporter

China retained its momentum as the world’s No. 1 auto exporter during the first half of 2023, exporting 300,000 more cars than Japan in the period after overtaking its rival in the first quarter. The results were largely driven by gains from rising demand for new-energy vehicles (NEVs) and increased Russian deliveries.

China’s auto exports between January and June surged 77.1% from a year ago to about 2.34 million cars, according to data released by the General Administration of Customs.

China has made remarkable achievements in automobile export so far this year. The export of automobiles topped the world, exceeding that of Japan in both the first quarter and the first half of the year. The country has grown into the world’s largest automobile producer, consumer market and exporter. GAC’s statistics showed that China exported 2.78 million autos in the first seven months, up 74.1 percent year-on-year, reaching a total value at 383.73 billion yuan ($53.35 billion), up 118.5 from a year earlier.

Xpeng CEO hails win-win technological cooperation with Volkswagen

Finally for today, we look at what seems to be a reversal of the decades old practice of Chinese products being built on the back of western tech. Xpeng may not be the top seller in China but is a global leader in EV tech as well as a leader, if not THE leader in autonomous aerial vehicles – AKA Flying Cars.”

So this move by WV could be seen as a step to leapfrog a couple of gen of technology and be at the forefront of 22nd centurty auto products. As always the full, interesting article can be read by pressing in the image.
