Much like the British referendum, they are of course non binding, and no Government can ever please or satisfy everyone. But in most cases,

Daimler Autos makes smart moves to plug into the China EV market.

Daimler AG is working with China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, to set up a joint venture to make the electric version of Smart cars in China.
This is probably long overdue as the original ICE Smart was a very popular model in China and was soon widely copied.

With a planned release date of 2022, the new Smart had better be extra smart as there are already many local EV versions running on the roads in China.

Perhaps Daimler are betting on cost effective production to make a Made In China Smart an attractive option to global buyers?

QUESTION: Would you buy a MIC EV?
Let us know.

New Food Regulations in China

China Updates Food Laws

As previously mentioned, China overhauled her food safety regulations beginning of December 2019.

Whilst wide ranging, a notable point is the strengthening of consumer protection.
The new law targets false, misleading or exaggerated marketing claims intended to mislead or confuse shoppers.

This seems to target products that use actors or other non professionals to endorse a product or use false inspection certificates.

The maximum penalty is a fine up to 1 Mill RMB- there is no mention of prison time.
Food safety education for consumers and society at large will be stepped up.

On the surface, this seems a step in the right direction, however, those of us here for some years know that China is not actually short of laws, just the teeth and political will to enforce them. 2020 will be interesting.

China Tests Autonomous Vehicles

With an investment of 2.15 billion yuan (around 307 million U.S. dollars), the 573-hectare facility in the city of Shaoguan aspires to become a world-class vehicle testing centre upon completion.

It will be constructed by Chinese automaker Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. Ltd. (GAC Group) and the government of Shaoguan.

Chinese Court finds in favour of Cadbury UK Ltd in IP case

Sweet Taste of Success

A Chinese confectionery-maker has been ordered to hand over 2.43 million yuan ($347,196) in compensation to Cadbury UK Ltd. after a Beijing court found it had infringed on a trademark held by the 195-year-old chocolate brand.

Yikoulian (Xiamen) Food Co. Ltd. registered the trademark ‘怡口莲’ in 2012, using it on a range of popular crispy rice-based chocolate bars.
It translates roughly as “delicious lotus,” bears more than a passing similarity to Cadbury’s ‘怡口蓮’: it sounds identical read out loud, but the Chinese brand uses a simplified Chinese character at the end, Cadbury uses traditional form.

Cadbury charged Yikoulian confused and misled buyers and damaged its reputation. The court ordered Yikoulian to cease production, sales and promotion of products with the counterfeit trademark, remove online ads, take the trademark out of its company name and pay damages and expenses of 2.43 million yuan.

The court cited the identical pronunciation and meaning as well as the overlap in distribution channels, customers and market in finding Yikoulian had engaged in unfair competition. Products from both companies were often sold side by side in supermarkets, it noted.
The presiding judge said companies should foster a good business environment, use their initiative to create their own brands, rather than “piggybacking” on others.

It seems now that foreign firms are starting to have more chances of winning cases in China than Chinese brands are in the US.
