Greetings, where in Beijing it is a rather tropical 39*c and a bit degrees warm. But, no matter, we are, today at our holiday beach home in the city of Qingdao. One of northern China’s more popular beaches. Where it is also warm, close to 38*!

Where is Qingdao?

Qingdao is located in northern China, on the east coast. In Shandong province to be precise, about 5 hours fast, hi-speed train ride from Beijing. Or looking at it another way, just one province (Jiangsu) north of Shanghai. Still confused? Try this map of China provinces. What is a Facekini?

Today we are taking a dive into “Modern Chinese Culture” and exploring facekini’s. Perhaps when you think of facekini, you are reminded of similar sounding objects, such as bikini or zucchini. You’d be close with the first guess.

Originally created around 2004, a facekini is essentially a Lycra swimming cap, extended to cover the face and neck. Primarily to protect seaside swimmers from jelly fish bites and sunburn.

Over the years it has morphed from a rather terrifying, ghoulish head cover ( akin to something you might expect at Halloween but not the beach) to a creative, and artistically functional full body swim suit.

We could probably wax on for a thousand words trying to further describe a facekini, but when a picture is worth a thousand words, and we have links to so many pictures, why would we?

The takeaway here for business:

Asian people—our skin is yellow, so we tan really easily. We don’t think it’s pretty. We think being pale is pretty.
