Hong Kong’s Floating Jumbo Restaurant

Hong Kong Jumbo Floating Restaurant

Hello, finally it’s Friday, meaning we shift from our weekly China marketing, business, social and tech news to a more relaxed, weekend orientated image gallery to highlight a different perspective to your Chinese customers lives. Recently we have favoured a nautical, well, aqua theme, previewed below, so today we continue with a look at the iconic Hong Kong Floating Restaurant.

Hong Kong Floating Restaurant.

Not exactly news as such, but it fits in with our recent nautical or marine themed posts over the past few weeks. For those few who do not know what the Hong Kong floating restaurant is – or was – maybe some background info will be useful?

Commissioned in 1976, the Hong Kong Floating Restaurant was, as its name implies either a huge ship transformed to a restaurant, or a huge restaurant converted into a ship. However, as you will see from the image gallery – below- being constructed to replicate a Chinese Imperial Palace it was rather unique either way.

As a Hong Kong floating landmark it was well known around the world, a “must be seen at ” place for many of the then rich and famous. Including HRM Queen Elizabeth.

Its menus included roasted suckling pig, lobster and double-boiled bird’s nest, a Chinese delicacy. In the 1990’s when the world was being “invaded” by the then revolutionary 35 MM camera toting, clicking Japanese tourists, the Jumbo Restaurant was a top location. All in all it served over 30, 000, 000 people.

During the first wave of Covid, like most restaurants, the Floating Restaurant was closed. As the pandemic dragged on, lack of patronage and ongoing wharfage and maintenance costs forced the restaurant to permanently shut its doors.

Around the middle of June 2022, the Jumbo Restaurant was to be moved to a new, more cost effective location so repairs could continue. Sadly, a few days into its journey, the vessel capsized and sunk.

At present is is being described as a devastating accident. However an investigation has been launched, presumably by insurance firms who may be suspicious of the circumstances.
