China Technology

When you think of China what is your first thought, when you think of technology in China, what is your impression? Today we are changing gears a bit, quite a bit actually to look at technology in China from a different aspect.

Chances are pretty good that if you have visited China, as a tourist, you are familiar with cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen. The big, bright bustling cites that appeal to many western people because, well, they are very much like the places back home!

When The Bic first arrived in China, around 2001, he was based in a small town in Jilin province. That is up in North China, not too far from Haerbin, which isn’t too far form the Russian border. At that time China was just revving up in her development. Consequently, whilst most homes had a good source of fresh water, either piped or spring, bathing was a different matter. OK, let’s clarify that. Armed with a bowl washing the body, hair, cleaning teeth was not an issue. But that hot, lingering shower they we foreigners took for granted was smoothing else again.

Now, before you start looking down your nose, let’s introduce you to the bathhouse.
The bathhouse, was as the name implied a building holding bathing facilities. But more. Oh so much more. We are not going to go into details here, but just imagine something like Caesars Palace, grandiose and luxurious but full of public and private bathing families. Steaming hot showers, hot mineral pools, ice cold plunge pools, soapy massages, vigorous rub downs. A family affair. This was a central social gathering place.

People form all levels of life walked in, disrobed – within modesty limits of course – and became one. The great melting pot. Or steaming pot. In Europe they would be known as spas,. By appointment only. And probably cost you a kings ransom. After a short time one starts to challenge ones view of what is a sophisticated society.

Today, some 20 years on China march to prosperity has all but eliminated the need for a weekly trip to the public bath house. New homes in China today are built with shower cubicles and many Chinese soon convert them to steam rooms, hot tubs, and jet baths. All AI controlled by mobile phone of course~ But yu know, China is a reasonably large country. One could say big. So, there are still areas where your nearest neighbour is hours away and hi tech showers have not quite reached you. So what does one do? I

In the following video, one enterprising woman shows us the answer. It may be crude and basic, but again, with a collaboration of old and new tech she …. well, watch and see!
Living alone in the countryside, the most troublesome bathing problem, 200 yuan machine can easily solve it, too easy to use. The narration is in Chinese but Chinese language skills are not required. The video explains everything very simply.
