Sign of the times

China no fly zone;

They say a picture is worth a thousand words,. So, you can create your own narrative for this one but here is a little background. It was taken a few Km north of Beijing Capital Airport. Behind and all around is a bustling dormitory and commercial area. To us it was a stark reminder of just how far we have come with technology. Would we have even imagined coming across such a sign say, 5 years ago?

Today, brands such as JD and the Alibaba group use drones for on line shopping delivery. JD in particular has a distribution centre a few hundred metres from this location. The surrounding offices and apartments are a good source of business. Being an airport location, many industries are storage and delivery related. It is not unusual to see a drone or three skimming across the evening sky from a freight forwarding company to the airport cargo area.

Less than 5 km from the end or start of number three runway, this bit of air space can become mighty congested. Although the image makes it very obvious what the target is, the sign also goes on to list kites, balloons, RC aeroplanes and lanterns. Sort of a generic “Keep Clear” sign for the sky!
